1978 MGB SEBRING TWINCAM

1978 MGB Sebring Twincam

A twin cam MGB?? Now that’s an interesting proposition.

MGs seminal sports coupe, the BGT, is loved by many and often seen as the most practical and usable example of the British classic sports car. With nearly 400,000 examples built, the little GT remains a popular exhibit at car shows and meets, and often appears as a daily driver, certainly during summer months. So it’s a practical, well regarded British sports coupe.

What if you were to bring it a little more up to date? A little lighter, easier to start and run on a cold morning, a little more free revving, with a better gear change… and a bit more road presence.

Our Sebring-bodied MGB Twincam is precisely that car. Combining the B with the power and transmission from a mark 1 Mazda MX-5, to make arguably the most practical and usable classic British sport coupe. This is a genuine proposition as a daily drive classic car.

Developed as a promotional model by Evans, the waterless coolant experts, little expense was spared in the build of this car. A bespoke wide bodied Sebring look is achieved with extended arches front and rear, and the dechromed coachwork looks all the cleaner in simple Old English White. Chunky graphite minilites complete the Sebring racer look, and give the car a purposeful stance.

Interior is simply finished with new seats in black, piped with white, new black carpets, and simple, period instruments, including a classic audio head unit which has connectivity for a smartphone.

Power is from a 1.6 litre Mazda twincam, matched with a Mazda 5 speed box, which gives, to my mind, one of the best manual gear changes ever available in an affordable sportscar. Cooling is taken care of, naturally, with Evans waterless coolant. Suspension is standard MGB, brakes are sensibly upgraded disks up front and drums to the rear. Exhaust is bespoke stainless steel.

So there you have it. The most popular British classic, combined with the best selling 2 seater convertible, to make arguably the ultimate practical classic sports coupe.
