1973 DINO 246 GT BY FERRARI

1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GT ‘E Series’ bt Scaglietti

The Dino has, over time, undergone something of a quiet reappraisal.

Once positioned as the more accessible Ferrari, it is now widely considered one of the marque’s most complete and rewarding driver’s cars—its mid-engined balance, compact proportions, and delicate styling offering something arguably more engaging than many of its V12 contemporaries. As values have risen, however, the conversation has shifted. It is no longer simply about owning a Dino, but about finding the right one. This example falls very much into that category.

Completed on 27 July 1973, this ‘E-Series’ Ferrari Dino 246 GT was supplied new to the UK via Maranello Concessionaires, specified in Blue Metallizzato over Beige—a combination that remains particularly well suited to the car’s shape. It has remained in the UK ever since and, with just over 15,000 miles recorded, presents as a notably original and carefully preserved example. Importantly, it retains matching numbers across chassis, body, engine, and gearbox, as supported by its accompanying Massini report. The paint and interior are understood to be largely original, and the car has clearly avoided the sort of restorative work that, while often well intentioned, can diminish the character and long-term desirability of these cars.

The ‘E-Series’ cars are generally regarded as the most resolved of the Dino production run. With improved carburation, revised interior controls, and a more usable layout, they represent the model at its most refined—something increasingly reflected in buyer preference. Where this example distinguishes itself further is in its level of preservation. It was invited to the Preservation Class at the Salon Privé Concours at Blenheim Palace in 2022, where it was awarded Runner-Up with an Honourable Mention. Recognition in this category is not easily achieved and tends to be reserved for cars that demonstrate a rare degree of originality. In today’s market, that carries significant weight.

Ahead of its concours appearance, the car was subject to a programme of sympathetic recommissioning, including a top-end engine rebuild, replacement of the fuel tanks, and attention to the braking, suspension, and cooling systems. The approach was measured—ensuring mechanical integrity without compromising the underlying originality that defines the car. It is offered with a reassuring history file, including its original Ferrari warranty booklet, operating and maintenance manuals, spare parts catalogue, tools, and spare wheel, all housed within the correct leather wallet. The 246 FS registration plate remains with the car.

As the market for classic Ferraris continues to evolve, the emphasis has become increasingly clear. Originality, provenance, and rarity now sit at the forefront of collector demand, particularly for models such as the Dino, where many examples have been restored to varying degrees. Cars that remain largely untouched—yet properly maintained—are becoming notably scarce. Concours-recognised preservation examples rarer still. In that context, this Dino represents more than simply a well-presented example. It sits within a small and increasingly sought-after subset of the market: low-mileage, matching numbers, UK-supplied cars that retain their original fabric and have been acknowledged at concours level. For the collector, that combination offers both immediate appeal and longer-term relevance.

A particularly fine, highly original Ferrari Dino 246 GT, and one that aligns closely with the direction of the market.

POA – a notably original and well-preserved Ferrari Dino 246 GT of considerable quality.
